The Dreaded Endocrinologist

So I dreaded going to see the Endocrinologist for as long as I had the appointment. Going in I really wasn't sure what he was going to tell me or even why I was having to go see him. After all my Dr had given me the birth control pills that would help with my menstrual cycle. I wasn't even remotely ready to have a baby so I didn't need to find out anything else about what was going on inside of me. Boy was I wrong.

In case you didn't click the link to find out what an Endocrinologist is, I will give you a short break down. Your Endocrine System is a group of glands that make up your hormones. Different types of hormones control reproduction, metabolism (food burning and waste elimination), and growth and development. Women with PCOS have increased androgen's or “male” hormones. So the Endocrinologist's job is to diagnose diseases that affect your glands. They know how to treat conditions that are often complex and involve many systems within your body. Your primary care doctor refers you to an endocrinologist when you have a problem with your endocrine system.

One of the first test that was completed was a ultra sound of the adrenal gland to see if that was were the extra "male" hormones was coming from. When completing this they found no problem with the adrenal gland. Which was good news on my end because this could have led to even more problems suchs as Cushings Syndrome.

After there was nothing found with the Adrenal Gland there was testing done on my Thyroid, Pituitary Gland, and Ovaries. There was also a Glucose test envolved to determine whether or not I was a Diabetic. All of these tests come up with nothing so there was still no answer as to the PCOS. The Glucose test show that I was a borderline diabetic, however I was not suppose to eat or drink anything after midnight and I had eaten a King Size Snickers bar at around 11:50 pm so needless to say I dont think the test was correct. Even so the Dr put me on Metformin because it was to help with the delay of onset Diabetes. Diabetes is just another side effect of PCOS as it cause you to become insulin resistant. I did not stay on the medication long at all because it was making me sick so I decided to stop taking it. Little did I know that this could effect me later on.

There was also another ultrasound done on my ovaries and I was shown where all the cysts where. At this point I was pretty much told that my chances of ever having a child was very slim. This weighed heavy on my shoulders for quite some time. I then just took on the mindset that I didnt not want any children. I mean who needs them whiney things running around asking for everything anyway. I had a niece and she was my world so I didnt need one of my own I would just spoil her.

After everything that I had been through I finally just decided that it was not meant for me to have mine own child and I came to terms with that. I would just spoil me niece which was a whole lot of fun and then I was blessed with 2 nephews.

I never thought that I could love someone as much as I loved my niece but boy was I wrong when them two came along. So now I have 3 munchkins to spoil and am at total peace with the fact that I can not have children (or so I thought).

Until next time,
AAJ
